Once again, Holland Baroque delves into the rich, musical tradition of 17th-century Brabant monasteries, chapels and sheltered churches. The centuries-old tradition of the ‘Boxmeer Miracle’, dating back to the year 1400, is the leitmotiv in this new programme. Still every year during the Boxmeer Vaart, this relic, which miraculously came into being, is solemnly carried through the streets of Boxmeer.
Central to this programme is the music of the brilliant, Brabant organist and composer Benedictus à Sancto Josepho. Benedictus, who lived and worked as a Carmelite in Boxmeer, left an impressive oeuvre that rivals the best European composers of his time. Much of his work and that of other Brabant composers has hardly been heard in our time. After extensive research by Judith and Tineke Steenbrink, Holland Baroque is bringing these forgotten masterpieces back to life.
