Overview

In this brand-new programme, the Italian composer and cellist Giovanni Sollima joins forces with the adventurous ensemble Holland Baroque. Expect fiery solo pieces, Mediterranean melodies, new compositions, passionate improvisations, and a touch of metal.

From explosive cadenzas to whispering pizzicatos: Sollima makes his cello sing, race and dance. Holland Baroque creates a colourful soundscape around him, with a keen ear for both style and spontaneity. A concert like an encounter between sun and sea, between the 17th century and the present day – between tradition and the boundless power of imagination.

Giovanni Sollima is a true cello virtuoso and an extraordinary composer. He communicates through music bursting with Mediterranean rhythms, full of quintessentially Italian melodies, and he spans all stylistic periods, from the ‘Jura of the Cello’ – as he calls the Baroque period – right through to metal. He is also a qualified scholar of the ancient Italian cello school. His audience is highly diverse, ranging from classical music enthusiasts to young metalheads. Giovanni Sollima wows them all on his 1679 Francesco Ruggieri cello.
