Holland Baroque & Wu Wei

Wu Wei is a virtuoso on the sheng, the Chinese mouth organ that evokes three thousand years of Chinese music culture and is a small miracle of harmony, melody, and rhythmic possibilities. Picturesque improvisations effortlessly navigate between repertoire from different centuries and continents. In addition to compositions by Bach, Telemann and Rameau, the album contains traditional Chinese music.

All pieces have been arranged by the artistic team of Holland Baroque, Judith and Tineke Steenbrink. The wonderful sounds of Wu Wei blend harmoniously with the sound of Holland Baroque.Wu Wei speaks to this special collaboration, saying, “Baroque music is like light. It touches you and attracts your attention whether you want it or not. You are seized by it, and I mean both in positivity, in melancholy and in heartbreaking grief.

Together they went on tour in 2017 and there the basis for this CD was laid. NRC praised the program with Wu Wei as one of the highlights of Dutch classical concerts of 2017. On stage you hear western baroque and eastern sounds, Telemann to a Chinese dragon dance.

Earth Particles

Earth Particles

Outside Music
Holland Baroque & Leszek Możdżer

After the invitation of Holland Baroque, Możdżer wrote the music for the CD Earth Particles. At the beginning of 2017, the adventure started with a number of concerts throughout the Netherlands and the CD recording at De Vereeniging in Nijmegen. An incredibly beautiful encounter.

Leszek about the cooperation: "Suddenly I found myself among people like me. People who truly seek the beauty and simply love music. Every note had a meaning, every second of music revealed a significance which was raising the level of natural joy. Each segment was being discussed, but the music was unfolding naturally during the rehearsal, with every take the new possibilities of interpretation appeared so even the discussion was unnecessary. We just played and smiled, smiled and played.
Also during the performances and after the music was printed on paper, sudden ideas came up and joy became an integral part of the composition and our playing together."

Comments:
  • "You have to listen, because this music is certainly great!"
  • "I bought the album last weekend and I listen to it every day. Outstanding !!!!!"

Holland Baroque & Eric Vloeimans

After the successful album Old, New & Blue, Holland Baroque and Eric Vloeimans launch their new album Carrousel, an amazing blend of two worlds. The first album was an encounter of two musical styles, on this new album the border between baroque and contemporary music is gone; a musical fusion is accomplished. With Eric Vloeimans, Holland Baroque moves between cornetto and celesta, Bach and Vloeimans, baroque and the present.

The album is named after the eponymous piece Carrousel, in which Bach’s music is continuously embroidered on: playing with repetition. Repetition is an essential theme in both Eric’s improvised music and baroque music. The CD contains, among others, the whispering Mumu, a special mix of cornetto, trombone and trumpet in Ocean of Petals, a beautiful arrangement with Bach-like elements of Armin, and a dose of Mendelssohn in Chorizo.

Loevendie And Bosgraaf: Nachklang,

Loevendie And Bosgraaf: Nachklang,

This album celebrates the friendship between Theo Loevendie (b1930) and Erik Bosgraaf (b1980). Having written a part for the recorder virtuoso in his opera about the life and times of the philosopher Spinoza, Loevendie has proceeded to compose several other works which marry the Baroque idiom of the recorder’s natural home with his own, jazz-inflected idiom. Most notable among them is the recorder concerto Nachklang, dedicated to Bosgraaf like several other works on the album. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no. 3 is the origin of a sparkling composition for recorder, three violins, three violas, three cellos, double bass and harpsichord.

This album is the embodiment of a unique friendship between an elderly composer and a recorder player exactly 50 years his junior, Theo Loevendie (1930) and Erik Bosgraaf (1980). The two clicked right away, both musically and personally. Both celebrate music as a vital, living language, both have an affinity for improvisation and jazz, both live in a musical universe which defies categorization.

This new recording presents the first recording of Nachklang, a concerto for recorder and baroque orchestra. Furthermore a Dance for Three for violin, clarinet and recorder, as well as several improvisations and recorder solos. A fascinating program of new music by one of The Netherland’s most interesting composers, played by the most adventurous and groundbreaking recorder players of the moment!

De Pindakaasprins Audio CD

Once upon a time – not so very long ago – there was a street it always rained in, day in, day out. In the street was a house, which was always quarrelled in, year in, year out. In the house lived a family: a father, a mother and three children. One day, the children decide they’ve had enough.

In their adventurous journey, the three heroes are accompanied by solid rock & roll and sweltering baroque.

Holland Baroque plays compositions by, among others, Bach, Rameau, Händel and Van Der Horst.

Erik van der Horst, audio CD director, actor, composition, vocals // Maartje van de Wetering, actor, vocals // Kaspar Schellingerhout, actor, composition, guitar, vocals // Freek Vielen, lyrics // Tineke Steenbrink, Judith Steenbrink and Erik van der Horst, music compilation, arrangements − Vincent de Kort, conductor // Jared Sacks, sound engineer

Holland Baroque meets Eric Vloeimans

“The trumpet blends wonderfully with the baroque instruments.”
“Sometimes, Vloeimans subtly joins the interplay of lines, another time he brutally breaks into a Bach choral with a scorching jazz solo.”
*****Merlijn Kerkhof (NRC), October 2013

“They are each other’s guest, creating colouring pictures of which the outlines have been drawn just a second ago, or centuries.”
“Baroque for jazz lovers and the other way round.”
Rudolf Nammensma (Leeuwarder Courant), November 2013

"...these musicians simply seek out the music's inner drama and bring it to the fore."
Jean-Yves Duperron, Classical Music Sentinel, July 2012

Holland Baroque’s fourth CD! This time we enthusiastically dived into Vivaldi’s music with Rachel Podger. It turned out to be a great adventure, because every concerto opens up a new musical book. An exquisite chance for an orchestra like Holland Baroque to show its powers in both big and small gestures. Grazie mille, Antonio Vivaldi!

Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) & 18th c. Dance Manuscripts
Musical director: Miloš Valent
Soloist: Jan Rokyta

“One of the most entertaining and brilliantly invented recordings I have heard in ages…A rich and varied mix of music and styles.”
Graham Williams on www.sa-cd.net, October 2011

“A real treat.”
De Telegraaf, September 2011

To say that Telemann perfectly mastered the French and Italian style, would be stating the obvious. Countless ensembles – we, for one – have performed the music Telemann has composed in those styles. With Barbaric Beauty we have done something very different: we have focused on Telemann’s Polish style. At least that is how he characterized the style he developed based on the music he discovered in the border region of Poland and Hungary. In his memoirs Telemann wrote:

“In 1704, I was appointed Kapellmeister in Sorau (Zary) by His Excellency Count Erdmann von Promnitz. When the Court resided in Plesse and Cracow for six months, I got to know both the Polish music and the music of the Hannaken people in all its barbaric beauty.”

These colourful concertos for a combination of various solo instruments show the diversity of tone colour of both the individual instruments and the instrument groups. In this album, Holland Baroque works with the young French flute virtuoso Alexis Kossenko. In addition to his work as an orchestra member and a soloist he is a much in demand chamber musician and he performs with many renowned ensembles throughout Europe.

Concertos Musical director: Matthew Halls

"Dynamic subtlety and euphonious tuning make this a hypnotic album, one to set on repeat."
The Star Ledger, 10 November 2008

The theme of Holland Baroque’s first album is Europe, for Georg Muffat is a European avant la lettre. The style of the concertos on this album is called Gemischter Geschmack (mixed flavours). Here, Muffat combines the achievements of the French, German and Italian music traditions. For their first album, Holland Baroque worked with harpsichord player, organ player and conductor Matthew Halls. This English musician graduated at Oxford University and has been performing with many prominent ensembles and orchestras ever since, and he is the artistic director of the Retrospect Ensemble.
