The young, star violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte sets sail in high Baroque waters with Holland Baroque. Together they shine in an exquisite program of ravishing Italian concertos for strings. Here we find the grand masters of the 18th-century Italian violin culture: Vivaldi, Valentini, Geminiani, Corelli and Locatelli.
Pietro Locatelli lived in Amsterdam for the last 35 years of his life and wrote his concerto there in 1741, which was nicknamed ‘Il pianto d’Arianna’. The piece is a mini-opera without text, in which the solo violin plays the part of the desperate Ariadne. After the departure of her lover Theseus, she experiences the each of the stages of grief: disbelief, anger and finally resignation. Storytelling is in the genes of Locatelli as well as Théotime and Holland Baroque. The French Théotime is part of the youngest generation of Baroque fanatics. He studied at the Conservatoire National, was recruited by William Christie to join Les Arts Florissants and is equally at home in Leclair, Fauré, Couperin and Schumann.
